Chapman is a building and plastering firm, so the plastering is not something we subcontract. Skims, floats, boarding and re-skims inside; sand and cement, K Rend and lime render outside. We plaster the houses we build and renovate, and we take on plastering and rendering jobs on their own across West Dorset and East Devon, from a single ceiling to a whole house.

What is included

Every plastering or rendering job, covered

Skimming and re-skims

Walls and ceilings skimmed flat and ready for paint, including re-skims over sound old plaster, artex and tired surfaces. Rooms are sheeted, and swept up at the end of every day.

Boarding and float

New stud walls and ceilings boarded, floated and set. Dot and dab on blockwork, sand and cement float where a solid backing is needed.

External render

Sand and cement render with a smooth, sponged or roughcast finish, and through-coloured K Rend systems that need no painting. Beads, bellcasts and expansion joints set out properly.

Lime plaster and lime render

Haired lime plaster on stone, cob and lath, and lime render outside, for older and listed houses that need to breathe. See the listed buildings page for how we approach that work.

Repairs and patching

Cracked and blown plaster cut out and made good, water damage repaired, and new openings and chases plastered in so the repair disappears under the paint.

Part of a bigger job

When we are building or renovating a house, the plastering is programmed in with the rest of the work. No waiting on another firm, and the finish is the same throughout.

Asked and answered

Do you take on plastering jobs on their own, without the building work?

Yes. Whole houses, single rooms, ceilings and external render are all taken on as standalone jobs. We have a full time plastering team, so we can usually fit smaller jobs in between the larger builds.

How long before I can paint new plaster?

A fresh skim usually needs a week to ten days to dry out fully, longer in winter or on thick float coats. It should be an even pale pink before it is painted, and the first coat should be a watered down mist coat. We tell you the timing when we leave.

What is the difference between sand and cement render and K Rend?

Sand and cement is a traditional render that is painted once it has cured. K Rend is a through-coloured silicone render that is applied thicker, needs no painting, and stays cleaner for longer. Both are done in house. On older stone and cob houses we recommend lime render instead of either.

Can you re-skim over artex or old plaster?

Usually. Sound artex and old plaster can be sealed and re-skimmed. Where the old plaster is blown or hollow, it is better to take it back and start again, and we will tell you which it is when we look at it.

Do you plaster older and listed houses?

Yes, in lime. Haired lime plaster on lath or onto stone, and lime render outside, so the walls can keep breathing. Cement products are kept off old buildings.

Which areas do you cover for plastering and rendering?

West Dorset and East Devon. Bridport, Axminster, Lyme Regis, Charmouth, Beaminster and the villages around them are all within a normal day's run.

Plastering & Rendering across West Dorset and East Devon

Based between Axminster and Bridport, so both towns and everything between them is on the doorstep, and Lyme Regis, Beaminster, Seaton and Crewkerne are all a normal run. If your village is not on the list, ask anyway.
